Seth 23 Months
Dear Seth,
In just one month you will be 2 years old. I can hardly believe how fast these 23 months have flown by. You have really grown up, it seems every other day someone mentions how you're turning into such a little boy. Or a big boy, as the case may be. Big milestone in that arena, you quit pacifiers cold turkey. I warned you a couple of days ahead of time that it would happen. You were turning into such a little junkie, I swear (is it inappropriate to use that metaphor??). Anyway, you have never really adopted any other comfort item so I guess we shouldn't have been surprised, but it seemed like overnight you became completely obsessed with them. You knew where we kept them and would go on a hunt. At daycare they had to put your diaper bag up on the top shelf or else you'd go digging them out of the front pocket. And you couldn't just have one, you had to have as many as you could hold in your clutches. If there was another one in the room and you didn't have it you would throw an absolute fit! It was really hilarious and also not, all at the same time. So daddy and I decided the pacifier era was over. Saturday morning we gathered them all up and said goodbye to them and threw them all in the garbage. Of course you acted like we'd burned you with a hot poker, but got over it pretty quick with some snuggles with mama and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer special on TV. You're on day 3 now without them and I am seriously proud of how well you've done. As I anticipated, naps have been the toughest and there's been a lot of screaming and crying. But as a result, by the time bedtime rolls around you are so exhausted that you usually go to sleep without putting up much of a fuss. Now you ask for a book or a monkey or some other item to cling to as you drift off but overall you've been a real trooper about the whole thing.
You're turning into a real jabber monster. You have a few more words but I've given up on trying to keep track of which ones are new and what I've already recorded. Sometimes now you'll string them together though which is fun. "Daddy home" and "What is that?" and "More please" (mo peesh) are the phrases that come immediately to mind. You have words for things that don't sound at all like what the real word is, and we're having trouble translating. But there are definitely things that you say over and over again that are meaningful to you and no one else.
You are certainly a typical toddler in that you are constantly pushing the envelope, testing to see just how much you can get away with. But you also listen pretty well a lot of the time which is a relief (I thought you might never) and you learn quickly when it comes to cause and effect. When we say "if you do 'x' then 'y' will happen" for the most part you get the picture. That doesn't always mean you won't do x but once in awhile it's effective. This is also starting to work with bribery, e.g. if you eat one more bite of soup then you can have a banana.
You're getting to be very affectionate and hand out the kisses right and left. To me, to daddy, to auntie, your monkey, pages in your books, and today it was your own reflection in the mirror. And when you hurt me and I ask you to kiss it better, you will.
All in all I can honestly say it is an adventure being your mom. I love almost every minute of it. I'd be lying if I said it was all fun and games and cuteness but even in the toughest, most frustrating times, suddenly you'll do something amazing and make it all worthwhile.
Love you Monkey,
Mama

Thanksgiving Part 2
I promised another post with more pictures from Thanksgiving, plus lots of other picture worthy things have happened since then so I am really getting behind. In the meantime I'm also getting ready to migrate to Wordpress but I can't for the life of me think of a clever name for my new blog. But I digress...
Kisses for the kitty cat.
I know, I know, probably not going to win us any parent of the year awards. I assure you that he was closely supervised as he played with a bag on his head...
Friday morning we headed up to Renton to see my mom, who had much better light in her house :)
I'm sensing a theme here...
When Andy showed up Seth wasn't too sure what he thought about Barkley at first, so he had to snuggle with dad for awhile and kept a close eye on the doggy.
Happy Thanksgiving! We had a blast.

Spaghettastrophe
I have more pictures from Thanksgiving but I wanted to write about tonight before I forget about the battle of wills we had.
On the way home from day care Seth was signing/saying "eat eat" so when we got home I said he could have a couple of crackers while I heated up some spaghetti for him. Well he had some crackers and then wanted nothing to do with the spaghetti, he just wanted a banana. I said he could have some more crackers and the banana after he ate some spaghetti. This went on and on for quite some time and involved laying on the floor screaming and crying (Seth, not me, although I felt like it). I was very patient and even gave him a choice - he could either eat spaghetti at his Toy Story table or in the high chair. Lots of whining and crying but I said it was either spaghetti tonight or he was going to have a hungry tummy (thanks Mandy).
Finally at least an hour later I asked him again if he wanted some spaghetti and he said yeah so I heated it back up for him. He was standing on his chair alternating bites with a regular fork and one of his kids forks. Then I think maybe he was trying to get down, but he lost his balance and fell against the wall. The clock above us must have been just hanging on by a thread because it came crashing down right onto the bowl of spaghetti, flipping it up into the air and upside down. There was spaghetti everywhere, it was crazy. Amazingly enough there was a big pile right underneath the bowl so once I got Seth calmed down again I gave it back to him and he ate the whole thing and then signed "more." Ha! Mama wins! True to my word I let him have a banana after that.
I also wanted to mention that the last two nights he has refused to lay down in bed until he's gotten not one, not two, but THREE pacifiers. One for his mouth and one for each hand apparently. I don't know if he stashes them so he can find them in the middle of the night or what, but it's pretty funny. I keep thinking once he's two the pacifiers will have to go, but it seems like lately he's gotten more attached to them, not less. Still only in the crib or the car seat though, don't worry it's not like we let him run around at the mall with one in his mouth.

Thanksgiving Part 1
Well, since we left town yesterday I took 38 pictures with my new camera and ended up with a handful that I really like - meaning they look good to me personally. I have serious anxiety now about even sharing them, I have so many friends who are professionals. But I know they love me and won't judge :) I edited some of these just with Windows Photo gallery on my computer but they looked a lot better the first time when I fixed them in iPhoto on Eric's aunt's Mac.
I'm kind of wishing now I'd gotten the 35mm lens, it seems like I'm always too close to everything. But I can see the advantage of the 50.

Pictures from my phone
I got a new phone today since mine quit working. So I downloaded all the pictures and started flipping through them. Here are a few of my favorites in no particular order. I had to restrain myself from putting all 200 of them on here. Can't believe how much my boy has grown up!
Well that was a nice little trip down memory lane. I forgot how many good ones there were in there.
Running with Mama.
At the river.
First ride in the shopping cart.
Hangin' out on daddy's shoulders.
Like father, like son.
First Spokane Indians game.
First celebrity sighting.
Playing with Max's collar.
Celery stick at the Sandtrap, Gearhart, OR.
Tiger for 1st Halloween.
Eating the tassels on his snow hat.
Not too excited about the monster hat. We must have taken that back because I don't remember ever seeing it again...
Max in a Christmas bag.
Trying on the new car seat for size. It fit!
Naked story time.
Checking e-mail on his laptop.
First time checking out the ducks at Riverfront park.
Reorganizing the bathroom drawers.
Self portrait with Mama. One of my favorites.
Stealing another kid's ball at Discovery Park.
Discovery Park
Daddy's black eye from Hoopfest 2011.
Auntie Jenny has a dirtier face than Seth!
Mama and Daddy at Belton Chalet, Glacier, 2011.
First day care art project (and last apparently, we haven't seen one since).
Enjoying some mexican food.
Loving the Fred Meyer shopping "car"
Biggest lump ever, slipped by the pool at the Hallmark Inn, Cannon Beach.
Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach
Trying on Auntie Natalie's Uggs.
Well that was a nice little trip down memory lane. I forgot how many good ones there were in there.
