1st appointment!

Eric and I went to our first OB appointment today, how exciting!  Another milestone that we've never made it to before!  I saw the ARNP that works with Dr. H and it sounds like we will be alternating between the two of them for the rest of my pregnancy.  They gave me a new book called Your Pregnancy & Birth.  That was really convenient as just as I was getting my pap & pelvic Eric opened up to the page with a diagram of exactly what she was doing.  Other than that we went over my ultrasound (the baby's heart beat was 152 by the way), talked a lot about my symptoms, how good everything looks so far, how much weight I should gain, optional prenatal screening (we opted not to do any), etc, etc, etc.  My due date is officially 12/31/09 by my LMP and 1/1/2010 by the ultrasound.  She said they usually use the LMP date unless the two are more than two weeks apart.  So New Year's Eve it is!  That will be better for taxes I guess :)

I mentioned that I seemed to be really thirsty and asked if I needed to have my blood sugar checked, and she said no.  She said that the increased thirst is really pretty normal in pregnancy not to mention the weather has been getting a lot warmer recently and my body is probably adjusting to that as well.  She said if I had siblings or parents with diabetes then she'd be concerned, but at this point it is nothing to worry about.

Aside from that, I left some blood and urine to be checked for the usual stuff.  My next appointment is in 4 weeks with Dr. H, on the 29th, same time, same place.  I should have another ultrasound somewhere around 20 weeks, and at that time if the baby cooperates they can tell us the sex.  Yay!

I LOVE THIS POST! I can't wait to hear all those details. For some reason I'm always interested in the heartbeat. Emma's first heartbeat was 165 and from that, our doctor loosely, jokingly predicted that it was going to be a girl. She said, "165. It's a girl!" I guess the old wives' tales are that girl heartbeats are faster than boy heartbeats ... totally old wives' though because my nephew's heartbeats measured very similar to Emma's all the way through.

Keep sharing all these details! Isn't every appointment just so exciting? And don't worry, if you're like me and HATE the pap/pelvic, they don't have to do it again until the very end when they're checking the thickness of your cervix and if you're dilating! Most of those appointments, for me anyway, were all just, "How are you doing? Let's check the heartbeat. Let's check your blood pressure. Let's measure your belly and check your weight. Okay, see you later!" Really fast and simple. Unless you have a trillion questions, which we usually did. :)

I hope I get to see you this summer! Maybe we can come over and go to the Bookie again and do more pics on campus ... this time with YOU being the preggo one! :)

Baby Tranmer's heartbeat was 170 at 11 weeks. My mom swears that the faster heart beat = girls myth is actually true. And she was a labor and delivery nurse for 20 years, soooo she and everyone else think I'm having a girl. They're wrong.
You still haven't given your prediction. Are you having a girl or boy do you think? Any feeling either way?

Argghh, I don't know yet! I'm leaning boy I think.... but I don't have really strong feelings either way.

For the record, my mom likes to predict these things, and Amanda T., my mom thinks you're having a girl. And how cool -- I didn't know your mom was an L&D nurse! Manda, you already know my mom thinks you're having a girl. Though last week she thought boy. Now it's back to girl. My mom has been right in every single pregnancy she's predicted -- and working at a school with lots of young teachers, there are a lot of pregnancies.
