The dreaded "B" word

I had my 33 week checkup today and found out that little Seth is currently in a breech position.  His little head is up, his back is against my right side, and his butt is down by my right hip.  So I guess maybe it has been shoulder or elbow I've been feeling under my ribs.  Not to worry yet, S said there is still plenty of time for him to turn.  She said there are some things people do to try and get babies to turn, like inversions.  But she said if he has been particularly active lately (which he has), that is a good sign and he probably will just turn right back around on his own.  She also mentioned it feels like there's plenty of fluid in there which is another thing that makes it easier for him to move around on his own.  He was head down at my last appointment.  If he doesn't turn by 36 weeks they usually don't turn on their own, so then they would try to turn him manually around 38 weeks.  She said that Dr. H is really good at it, but it only works 50-60% of the time.  If it doesn't work, then we'll have to have the dreaded "C" word.  But I am not too concerned about it at this point.   It was interesting watching/feeling her poke around to figure out what position he is in.  She was seriously manhandling me.  So I guess there are no worries about hurting the baby with all the poking and prodding he gets from family members, haha.

Other fun facts about today's appointment...

B/P: 110/68
Weight: 179.2 (down 2 lbs since last appointment and she DIDN'T EVEN MENTION IT!)
Baby's heart rate: ~150 when he was still and it went up to ~160 when he was kicking, which is good!

Next time (day before Thanksgiving) I get to be screened for Group B Strep, which is a bacteria that causes infections that can be really really dangerous for newborns.  Sounds like no one really knows why some people have it and some don't, but if you have it then you need to have antibiotics during labor to protect the baby.  I don't even want to talk about HOW they screen for it.  You can look it up if you want.

We also had a little chat with someone in the billing department to find out just exactly how much this is going to cost us.  So far for all my appointments I have had a single $20 co-pay, plus 20% of labs and ultrasounds.  For the delivery, we will have a $300 co-pay.. and THAT IS IT!  No matter what happens (to me), $300.  Then it appears that Seth will have his own $300 co-pay as well for any care he receives in the hospital.  Sweet, $600 sounds like a pretty good deal, if you consider that the average uncomplicated delivery actually costs around $10,000!  So my final thought for today is that I am thankful for my job and my health insurance.

I won't tell you how they do the group b strep test...but don't worry, it's not as bad as you might be thinking. It's really pretty easy. :)

Whoa, this post was full of exciting news! I watched a show once where they did the inversion thing for a breech baby and it was SO CRAZY! I think they tried to do it while the woman was actually in labor though and it did not look fun. It sounds like your doc totally has things under control though and it's good they're monitoring all of that way ahead of time.

Also, I agree with Shauna. The Group B Strep test is not bad at all. It's like a 1-second thing. And I have friends who have had Group B Strep their first pregnancy and not their second. It comes and goes, apparently, and is just like any other bacteria we have in our bodies at any random time. Or so I've been told.

And yes, your health benefits sound awesome. I can't remember how much it cost us out-of-pocket for Emma because after all her NICU charges and my extra day in the hospital, we just lost track. But I do know that I am so thankful to have been double-covered b/c our two insurances REALLY saved us big-time with all of those unexpected charges.

I'M GETTING SO FLIPPIN' EXCITED FOR YOU! (No pun intended, in regards to Seth's to-do list in the next few weeks.) :)

I had my strep B done today. You don't even have to put your feet in the stirrups. No big.
My biggest worry about that is that if one has it, it means having to be hooked up to an IV right away. Blah. I don't know why it's such a big deal to me. But I don't want to be hooked up to a stupid IV right away! So, hopefully we'll both be in that 70%of woman who don't happen to have it in their 3rd trimesters.
It's good the midwife assured you there are options to get Seth to turn around before just scheduling that C-section. My mom has told me that the older Drs are really good at turning babies manually, that it's something they used to teach but don't anymore. Sounds like you picked a good doc.
Not sure how effective these are, but two things you might try...putting a flashlight down by your hoohoo. Apparently, babies follow the light? Also, putting cold on his head. I heard they don't like that, as I'm sure none of us would, and they tend to move away from it.
Could be old wives tales, but harmless, easy and free to try.

Oh, and I forgot to mention... I saw the NP for the first time yesterday. There were about 27 reasons I did not like her, but this one tops the sundae.
I got my first weight scolding.
So, she says to me..."Oh, let's take a look at your weight." And then she hems and haws for awhile and says in a higher than normal pitched voice, "weeeeeeeeelll, you reeeeeeaaaaally should be gaining about a half to a pound a week at this point and, let's see, hm, you've gained 5 pounds since you're last appointment. Your weight reeeeeeallly shoooooould be tapering off at this point because you just won't have room to eat as much."
So, the most important detail of the story is that is had been 5 weeks since my last appointment! Not only that, but this was the first afternoon appointment I've ever had. I had just eaten lunch and I had a full bladder, plus is was cold yesterday so I was wearing extra clothes.
I was really pissed. No tears though. I really didn't like her so I didn't care what she thought. I didn't even bother to point out that after all those years of schooling she still can't do math.

Oh, and since I'm on the rampage, she also had huge fake boobs and bad teeth.

LOL!! What IS it with these providers and their obsession with our weight??? I had not heard that trick about the flashlight by your hoo hoo (hehe) but the midwife yesterday did mention using varying temperatures to get the baby to move. And I have a friend whose baby was breech and she just had her husband talk and sing to her hoo hoo all night and their daughter turned right around to get closer to daddy, SO CUTE!!
