Seth 28 Weeks

Dear Seth,

You are 28 weeks old today. Yay, Mama is posting on time! You're napping right now though, and have been asleep for about 30 minutes. So if the last few days are any indication, you could wake up at any moment. Shrieking. Anyway, things are just rolling along. You are in perpetual motion from the time you wake up until you fall asleep. Your arms wave around and flap like a little bird. Your legs kick, kick, kick like you're riding an invisible bicycle. When you're on someone's lap you are always leaning, reaching for... whatever. Usually something you can't have. While you're leaning and reaching you're grunting "eh, eh, eh..." like everything is such a struggle. If you don't get what you're reaching for sometimes you have a little fit. When people say "OW!" you think it is a fun and HILARIOUS game so you keep doing whatever you were doing to elicit the reaction. This weekend it was grabbing and pulling on grandpa's chest hair.

After a short hiatus, you've gone back to repeating "Mamama" over and over again quite often. You say it with your mouth turned down in this exaggerated frown and a concerned look on your face and it is SO cute I can't even handle it. This morning I watched you for a minute in bed and you were even doing it in your sleep (minus the sound).

And with that, you have awakened. Until next time...

Love, Mama

Seth 27 Weeks

Dear Seth,

You were 27 weeks old...yesterday. I'm only a day late! It's been another busy week. Your first tooth's neighbor has made an appearance. It's pretty hard to see since you never sit still long enough for me to get a good look. But sometimes when you are having a fit and crying I can see it just fine. Oh, and getting a picture? Forget about it. Well, here's the best I could do anyway.

You're all wiggly again and must be almost constantly distracted. Yesterday I distracted you with sweet potato, yummm! I also made some zucchini-carrot puree that you gobbled up. Gobble gobble! You seem to like food pretty well, but your attention span for eating it is pretty short. After the first couple tablespoons you start fidgeting and grabbing the spoon. If I manage to wrestle it back from you then you will open your mouth for a bite and then blow "bubbles" and food flies all over both of us. I have to really fight not to laugh because I don't want to encourage that, but trust me, it's hilarious.

You're making slow and steady progress toward mobility. Still aways to go, but crawling is definitely on the radar. Right now you'll sit in cobbler's pose and lean forward onto your hands. You'll get one leg bent back behind you and then you'll just kind of rock back and forth. Eventually your other leg will pop out behind you too but then you'll either just face plant, or both legs will go flat on the ground. Sometimes you'll faceplant with both legs still out in front of you, but you can now push yourself back up into a sitting position from there. Amazing. At any rate, I'm not real comfortable leaving the room now if you're just on the floor by yourself. So instead of baby proofing, I just put you in your cage. That's right. Despite the look on your face in this picture, you don't really seem to mind.

Sleep, sleep, can't neglect sleep. Boy, I tell you, it is ALL in the timing. If I am late getting you down, LOOK OUT. If I've forgotten that it's been 4 hours since you ate, LOOK OUT. If you're fed and haven't been up too long, then you're easy as pie to put to bed. If not, these days I HAVE to just let you cry for a little while so you wear yourself out. Then I go in and pacify you and give you a little jiggle and you'll fall asleep finally. It's hard to get anything done when I have to schedule my day around your naps, but it's totally worth avoiding the battles.

What else? Hmm, quirk of the week - although this has been going on much longer than just this week, I just keep forgetting to mention it - you start to cry every time we lay you down on the changing table. And by cry I mean you let out this high pitched whine and then start to WAIL. My only guess is that you associate getting changed with going to bed or taking a nap... but you get changed other times too, so I'm not sure what the deal is. If I hand you something to play with you will stop, so I guess I'll have to hang some toys near by for you to look at.

Per Dr's orders we put some 1% hydro cortisone on your legs 2x per day and it totally cleared up the redness after like 2 days. Then it came back. So not sure what we're going to do now. Oh and speaking of the doctor, I took you in for your Hep B on Monday expecting to have to witness the vaccination drama and kiss your face and wipe your tears. Well you didn't even seem to notice you got a shot. A momentary "what the??" expression crossed your face and then you were right back to tearing the tissue paper off the exam table. You're such a little mini tough guy, you rock. I love that about you. Although we'll see just how tough you are (and how tough I am) one of these days when I take that pacifier away ;)

Love and kisses,
Mama

P.S. I haven't been hearing a lot of Mamama this week, but you've started saying Gagaga.

Poor Princess Buttakwup

Buttercup spent the day outside on Saturday after I strangled her put a collar and tag on her.  The first couple of hours she spent frantically panting and pawing on the glass like, hey guys I am totally not supposed to be out here!  After awhile she disappeared and in the late afternoon finally we heard her pitiful cries and found her hidden deep in the ferns and ivy underneath our fence that was partially knocked down in a wind storm earlier this spring.  I peeked under there and amongst the ivy I could just see her eyes, she was like the cheshire cat.  When I called her name she came creeping out right away and I transferred her to the garage for the night.  Eric stuffed a bunch of towels and stuff in the cat door (since the built in lock is basically powerless against this 20 lb hulk of a meowser when she gets a running start), but come Sunday morning she had dug it all out and got in anyway.  At that point I resigned to just keep a close eye on her because trying to force her to stay in the garage was likely going to do more damage than good, reinforcing an already negative association etc etc, since we ultimately do want her to go out there to use the litterbox when this is all over.  I should have bought stock in Nature's Miracle.

So anyway.  Eric and Seth took her to the vet this morning and indeed she does have crystals in her urine which make her hurt when she pees and could have possibly caused a UTI as well.  So a $65 injection to treat the possible UTI plus prescription cat food for a month to change the pH of her pee to clear out the crystals.  After all that we just hope and pray that she isn't already turned off by the litterbox - when they associate that with the painful urination that is why they start going other places.  I suppose worse case scenario we will just have to get a new one and maybe just relocate it to another area of the garage.  Almost $200 later in vet bills all I can say is this better work!

Our little Seth monster gets to go to the doc today too, to get his 2nd Hep B shot that they couldn't give him at his 6 month checkup since it was a few days shy of 6 months exactly from when he got the 1st one at the hospital.  So that will not be fun, I thought I had strategically missed witnessing the last round of imms but no such luck today.  He will be 27 weeks tomorrow and so far he has eaten rice cereal, avocado, applesauce, zucchini, prunes, carrots, and banana.  We tried banana for the first time yesterday and I expected it to be a big hit but he seemed pretty unaffected by it.  Maybe he just wasn't very hungry or there were too many distractions, we did have some friends over at the time.  I think next on the docket will be oatmeal baby cereal and then perhaps some sweet potato.  So far I think the zucchini is his favorite, he gulps it down just about as fast as you can spoon it in.  Prunes are the most fun for me though because of the awesome mess it makes all over his face.

Adios Amigas.

Cat pee update

Since I know you were all just dying to hear.... After changing out cat litter, litter box, everything, and vigilantly staying on top of the scooping, we had zero accidents from Buttercup. Until today. I had opened up two new sleep sacks that I bought for Seth yesterday and they were laying on the couch next to me waiting to be thrown in the wash. Buttercup jumped up and peed right on them, RIGHT next to me! I was close enough to reach out and smack her! Ugh!!! She managed to get pee on both of them, brand NEW, as well as on the couch cushion. UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Anyway. I needed coffee so I loaded Seth up in the car and went on a voyage to get some Nature's Miracle, since my stock was depleted from the last incident. I also picked up a cat collar and a tag because my plan was to banish Buttercup to the outdoors and get a kitten. Well then when I got home the pee had started to dry a little and I could clearly see a little pile of crystals in the middle of it. So that's a pretty strong indication that she's a little sicky with a UTI or something. Poor girl. Now I feel kind of bad I haven't done anything about it for this long. Granted, now I'm looking at probably a freaking huge vet bill but I'd rather have that than tiptoe around all the time wondering where the next piddle of cat pee is going to be found. It was only a matter of time before she hopped up in the crib and squatted I'm sure. The only bad part is now I don't get to get a kitten! Boo!

So Seth is 26 weeks old, here's his latest monkey picture. I'm getting so bad at doing these on time! I love this picture - the only problem is he kind of looks like a baby girl! I think he looks quite a bit like I did as a baby. I'll have to scan some old pictures of myself so you can see the resemblance.

6 month checkup and fun in the sun

Eric took Seth to his 6 month well baby visit. Growth is right on track. 18 lbs 15 oz which is 75th % ile. Height is 28" which is 90th, and head circumference is 18" which is also 90th. She said keep doing what we're doing with the solid food, try something new every 3 days or so. We were a little concerned about his skin - we have been dealing with a little rashy rash mainly behind his knees and under his chin. It seemed to have gotten worse over the weekend and she said it could have been the sunscreen. She said all the normal sunscreens are terrible with all kinds of irritating chemicals and recommended Vanicream instead. We got a handout on common sleep issues which reinforced what she said which is that a 6 month old does not need to be fed at night - or they should at least be able to go 8 hours. It's so weird because the handout talked mainly about sleep onset issues, i.e. inability to fall asleep without being rocked, jiggled, etc. Seth falls asleep on his own all the time, it's when he wakes up later that he flips out. The pacifier could be the key. The trouble is, I'm about as attached to it as he is. Not ready to give that up yet, but we'll see. I think his little tooth is really causing some problems right now because he's not napping that well either, so I'm going to hold off on doing anything drastic for a bit. Maybe things will just work themselves out.

Alriiiight, picture time! So as I mentioned, we went out to my dad's this weekend and Seth had a little blasty blast. Well, we all did. We dunked him in on Saturday in his new life jacket, but it didn't work too well because it was too big and basically just made him look really uncomfortable. And unfortunately I didn't have the camera. I choked again and didn't have the camera when we first put him in on Sunday in the float, but I ran and got it after the fact to get these.

Yay! Look at me! I love the water!

Warming up on a blanket, sucking on an ice cube in a washcloth, new favorite past time. He's not a huge fan of teething rings so far as I can tell. Eric calls them his chew toys. Whatever works I guess.

And just for fun, prune face!! I love how it looks like a little beard.

It's definitely been fun watching his reactions to food. His tastes seem to change from day to day. He went from hating avocado to just tolerating it. The first time he tried prunes he was so excited and gave me huge smiles. Then on Monday he was totally gagging on everything except rice cereal. Yesterday he was back in love with prunes but still grimacing about the avocado. I think tonight we're going to try some squash. Yum yum!

I have one more picture from this weekend that I want to share, but it looks so much like a picture of myself from when I was little, I have to find it and scan it in so I can put them side by side. He is 26 weeks today too, so I have to do a monkey pic too!

Seth 6 Months

Dear Seth,

You are 6 months old today. Happy Half Birthday!! Big news today, you've officially got a TOOF coming in! I can't exactly see it yet (mainly because your tongue is always in the way), but I can feel its sharp edge poking through. It's one of the textbook bottom middle front teeth and you have really been a champ about it. I could be wrong but I think by the time it comes through that far the worst is probably over. Right now you're laying on my bed next to me sucking on a wash cloth with an ice cube in it and you couldn't be happier.

Other big news, you started eating solid food this week. Oh wait, I guess I already mentioned that in a previous post. Oh well. Anyway, so far you've had rice cereal, mashed avocado, prunes, and applesauce. Just a tiny bit of the applesauce. And somehow your father managed to avoid changing a dirty diaper up until yesterday if you can believe that. Your number twos (and your toots) are certainly smelly these days. But as your Gramby predicted, it doesn't really gross me out as much as I thought it would. That's not to say I am not looking forward to flushing it down the toilet ASAP, but until then I guess I'll live.

This last weekend you got to take a little dip in the river up at Grandpa's house, boy was that fun! You panted and gasped a little when we first eased you into the water, but after a minute or two you seemed to be having fun, and splashed your hand a bit. When we pulled you out your diaper had swelled up to the size of a bowling ball, it was hilarious. I'm looking forward to enrolling in little shrimp swimming lessons at the YMCA!! You'll love that.

You are literally days away from crawling I think. You can scoot with your knees and on your hands, just not both at the same time. All it's going to take is a little energy and motivation and you'll do it. Tonight you had the motivation - my laptop - but it's pretty close to bedtime so I think you were just a little too tired, so you'd get started but then your head would just flop down on the bed. In the mean time you have basically figured out how to roll wherever you want to go. You almost rolled right off my bed tonight, I caught you just in time.

Your sleep is improving. You aren't necessarily sleeping longer, although this past Friday night you did basically sleep straight through from about 1:30am to 7:15am. I think it was a fluke, because since then it's been back to 2-3 hour stretches. I suppose I can't blame you if that tooth was coming in! But bedtime and naptime have gotten a lot easier. I feed you and then usually put you right down in your crib (awake) with a pacifier. You roll over on your tummy and either babble, whine, or cry until you fall asleep. If you are just talking or whining I leave you alone for as long as it takes. If you really start crying I still give you a few minutes and then come in and replace your pacifier and rub your back until you calm down. Lately I've only had to do this maybe once or twice before you give in and go to sleep. Bottom line, going to sleep is rarely a battle anymore, Oh Thank Heaven.

Well mama is tired, so I'll wrap this one up for now. Tomorrow we'll do a monkey picture since we skipped last week. And I'll post some pictures of your aquatic fun from the weekend at Grandpa's. You have your 6 month checkup in the morning too, so I'll have to give a full report on that, even though daddy is taking you while I am at work believe it or not!!!

Love, Mamama

Seth 25 Weeks

Dear Seth,

You are 25 weeks old today! I wrote a long post yesterday about your first 4th of July, so we'll keep this short. All I wanted to mention was that you've almost outgrown the playyard already. You didn't sleep on your tummy this weekend at all, mainly I think because you didn't quite have room to roll over. You sure did like scratching your finger nails on the mesh walls though, that made a fun noise. Anyway, before long we'll have to figure out some other sleeping arrangements for you on trips. We already had to take out the bassinet insert because you exceed the weight limit, and you don't fit on the little changing station at all.

You're inching toward the weight limit on your car seat too, which is gonna be expensive. Time is marching on. I can't keep up!

First 4th of July

This weekend we took Seth out to Grandpa's house on the river for his first 4th of July weekend extravaganza. Also on the agenda: solid food. Seth got his first taste of rice cereal on Saturday morning and it was quite the spectator event. Everyone gathered around with their cameras hoping for some entertainment and Seth did not disappoint. He was pretty enthusiastic about the whole process, especially the spoon itself. Mmm tasty. Sometimes I had to really twist and pull just to get it back. Next time I'll have to just give him a spoon and feed him with another one.

I really didn't want to deal with constipated baby, so later that day as I was making guacamole for the rest of us, I also mashed up a little avocado for Sethie-poo. I know, I know, against the rules, two new foods in one day, blah blah blah. I've been really going by the book with most of the baby stuff so far, but come on people, this is food we're talking about. Anyway, not that I need to justify my parenting decisions... I digress. So bottom line, Seth did not like his first sample of avocado, as you can see from his expression.

He was also gagging and heaving. I think I just did not thin it enough the first time, because we tried it again on Sunday and today as well, and it went down a lot easier. Still with the skeptical facial expressions, but no gagging. And I might add, it did the trick. No constipated baby, but oh that poo poo is sure icky now. Auntie Jen was lucky enough to get the first post solids dirty diaper. Gross!

Here's Seth hanging out on the deck with Grandpa. Grandpa got in trouble on Saturday for shooting off fireworks during Seth's nap. Luckily for him, Seth didn't wake up. After that he would shoot them off when Seth was awake, in hopes of getting him used to the noise. Seth was not too excited about the explosions, I'm sure it hurt his ears. I'll post a video of his reaction on Facebook. Grandpa thought it was pretty funny that Seth would never know it was him making those awful noises.

Here he is getting a ride on daddy's shoulders. He got a good mouthful of sunscreen from trying to eat Eric's hair.

Here's grandpa going up to jump off the new diving tower he just built this year. It's about 12 feet high and for some reason he decided to tie Spot up there. She's like a blow up lifeguard or something. I can just hear it now, "mommy, why does grandpa have a blow up doll?" For the record, we got it for him as a joke, so he could tie her on the back of the jet ski when he waterskis without a spotter. Hence her name.

And the obligatory 4th of July themed outfit and prop. I tried to get him to look up at the camera and smile, and he did, but it was really bright out so every picture I snapped his eyes were closed. So this one turned out to be my favorite.

And here he is sitting out by the camp fire, waiting for it to get dark so we could have the fireworks show. So happy after his 4th nap of the day. Notice the brilliant sunshine... about an hour later there was a TORRENTIAL downpour and we were all inside with our noses pressed against the glass praying it would blow over and stay dry long enough to blow some stuff up. It did. In the meantime we busted out some glow sticks and had a little dance party.

Finally, the weekend's grand finale, the show we wait for all year long. This year's fireworks were better than ever. Seth was up waaaayyyy past his bedtime but I think he actually did enjoy the fireworks. At first every time they would go off he would arch his back and wiggle and squirm. Then finally I started covering his ears, and he calmed right down and watched with fascination. When it was all over he crashed out hard.

Today we packed up and came home early afternoon after it started raining, again. Seth got a bath to wash off the weekend grime, dog spit, and sunscreen. Then he ate like a ravenous wolf (since all weekend he hardly nursed at all he was so distracted by all the activity), went to sleep, and woke up SCREAMING half an hour later. That pretty much brings us up to date.

Seth 24 Weeks

Dear Seth,

You are now 24 weeks old. The lateness of this letter is a testament to
how busy I've been. Busy because you and one of my clients have both
been exceptionally needy this week. Many hours have been spend tending
to the two of you. There were a couple of days this week where you
seemed totally incapable of entertaining yourself, which is not at all
the norm. Thankfully that was only temporary and you're back to being
content alone on your play mat for a few minutes at a time, batting at
your toys or pulling your feet into your mouth. You like to hang out in
your jumper, too, while daddy exercises on the elliptical.

So anyway... overnight you have become almost an expert sitter-upper.
You can sit up like a pro - until something catches your eye and you
flail to get it and fall over. Your ability to sit up makes bathing you
easier, and shopping too. You can now sit in a shopping cart by
yourself pretty well, yay! No more lugging the car seat in and out of
stores, that was getting heavy!

You're also an expert rolling over onto your tummy, and you do so almost
immediately when placed in your crib. Unfortunately you're not such an
expert rolling back the other way (or I suppose maybe you just don't
want to). So there you stay and you fuss and cry until someone rescues
you. Sometimes I flip you back over but lately I just give you your
pacifier and eventually you fall asleep that way. And no, you do not
sleep any longer on your tummy than you did on your back. Boo.

Sleep.... I've been really trying to enforce a 4 hour rule at night.
Even if it's been 3 hours and 59 minutes we try to get you back to sleep
without eating. Sometimes you're okay with this and sometimes not.
Last night you ate at 8pm and went to sleep, then woke up at 10pm and
were absolutely positively inconsolable until I fed you. I try to be
strong but it's not easy listening to you cry. I could just hear in
your voice "mama mama you are right here why are you not letting me
eat??" So I caved.

Speaking of eating, we're just days away from that new and fun milestone
- SOLID FOOD! Although "solid" is kind of a misnomer... mushy food
would be a more accurate description. The other day I fed you some
breast milk with a spoon and you were fascinated by that. I can tell
the whole spoon feeding thing will be a challenge because all you want
to do is grab the spoon and chew on that. You've had some practice
drinking water from a cup, too, and you loved it. In fact, when I
decided that game was over you had one of your first real temper
tantrums. I have to drink water on the sly because any time you see me
drinking from a cup or from my water bottle you are like "gimme gimme!"

You went in the kiddie pool this week, and didn't seem too bothered by
the cold water at first, until I got you in over your belly button then
you freaked out. You had missed a nap that day so maybe you just
weren't in the mood. But sitting in a couple of inches you seemed okay
with it and just splashed with your hand over and over again. We tried
again the next day with deeper water, but it had been sitting in the sun
for awhile so it wasn't quite as cold. You did great with that. You
even tipped backwards once and went all the way under for just a second,
which I'm sure was scary but you just coughed and sputtered a little
with a surprised look on your face. The true test will be this weekend
when we go out to grandpa's house for your first 4th of July. Can't
wait!

Love, Mama
